That simple sentence is part of a post titled On Leaving that Greyhawk of Mudville Gazette wrote for his children on September 23, 2004 prior to his first deployment to Iraq. It touched me deeply and I’ve never forgotten it. Occasionally, I go back and re-read it. In fact, I read it again just last week… to remind myself. That post touched many people and even inspired a song by the group 3 dB down.
Today, Greyhawk informs us of a design submitted in a contest at Wooden-Nickel.com by one David Self, also inspired by On Leaving. The outside edge of the designed coin carries the inscription [ed - corrected 5/1/08]
“God bless those that go fight the dragons.”
There are four other coin designs in this contest. Anyone can vote once per day per IP Address. Unfortunately, the contest ends tomorrow, April 30th. So, please, HURRY! Go vote today and tomorrow in the Wooden Nickel Contest Designer for #4.

Thanks for plugging my design! I am really, really kicking myself for not sending the info to greyhawk, et al at Miliblogs when the voting first kicked off.
Ah well, I appreciate the support.
Dave Self
PS – The nickel front actually only reads, “God bless those that go fight the dragons.” The rest of the quote is what I use in my signature line in the Military Association of GeoCachers (MAGC) forums (http://www.militarycache.org/magclist/index.php).
Thanks for pointing out my error. I’ve corrected the post, albeit belatedly.
I see this morning your design was #2 in the contest. Congratulations! As noted at the bottom of the contest page, the top 2 designs will be offered for sale on their site as “Stock Designs”. I look forward to being able to buy some.
